Be prepared for damaging winds, heavy rainfall and potential flash flooding from Wednesday due to Tropical Cyclone Alfred, as forecast by the @bureauofmeteorology.

Prepare now for possible severe weather impacts:
🍂 Clear your yard and gutters
🌳 Trim overhanging tree branches
🔒 Secure loose outdoor items by tying them down or bringing them indoors
📻 Pack your emergency kit with essential items including a portable radio, batteries and a first aid kit

Composting 101 🍌🥕🍎🍃🍊
Turn your food and garden waste into black gold — boosting soil nutrients, helping retain moisture, and cutting the need for fertilisers — all while keeping waste out of landfill and cutting carbon emissions! ♻️

Why compost?
- Reduces waste going to landfill = fewer household emissions 🌏
- Nourishes soil & strengthens plants 🌱
- Saves water by helping soil hold moisture 💧
- Cuts back on fertilisers 🌼

Quick tips:
✅ Balance greens (kitchen scraps) & browns (leaves, paper) — aim for 2 parts brown to 1 part green.
✅ Layer it: twigs at the base, alternate layers, finish with soil.
✅ Keep it moist but not soggy & aerate weekly.
✅ Skip meat, pet waste, fats, and glossy paper.

Did you know your daily laundry load can contain millions of microplastics that end up in our waterways? 👗

A 2016 study, found that on average 700,000 microplastic fibres from synthetic materials such as polyester, acrylic and nylon were released into wastewater for every 6kg wash!

While some microplastics are removed during the wastewater treatment process, most make it into marine and freshwater environments. Once in our waterways these microplastics cause chaos....aquatic animals tend to mistake these synthetic microfibres for food and end up with a range of health issues and sometimes starve.

This also means that your Friday night fish and chips are highly likely to be littered with these bad boys. Seafood is not the only source of protein in which you will find these plastic fibres...a 2024 study showed 88% of protein food samples all had contamination present including pork, beef, chicken and tofu.

Which means, almost all humans (around 80%) have microplastics present in their bloodstream.

So now we know life in plastic, is not so fantastic, how do we stop a task as innocent as doing a load of washing, from becoming our planet’s biggest environmental and health burden?

The good news is that you don’t necessarily have to do something drastic to cut the plastic from your weekly chore...buy a filter bag, change your wash settings, wear natural materials and simply wash and tumble dry less.

There’s four days left of the school holidays (not that we’re counting) 😂

If your kids are climbing the walls at home, get them to climb all over this 12-metre-high adventure playground at Archerfield Wetlands District Park instead!

The playground is home to water play features including misting elements and water pumps inspired by the site’s history as a water treatment plant, a 13-metre-long slide, tunnels, swings, bridges, rockers, and loads of equipment to climb on.

Archerfield Wetlands District Park also has plenty of parking, picnic shelters, barbeques, two toilet facilities, a youth hub with basketball court and soccer goals, a giant lawn area and a bush resources garden, making it a great destination for all ages.

This new precinct is all part of Brisbane City Council’s $100 million commitment to transform Oxley Creek over 20 years into a world-class green lifestyle and leisure destination in partnership with Brisbane Sustainability Agency. Check out the link in bio for more information 🔗

#ICYMI you can now recycle your blister packs across Australia at every @chemistwarehouseaus through the @pharmacycle_au program ♻️

It’s the best news for blister pack waste, which can’t be recycled through standard household recycling because it’s made of mixed materials and often contaminates recycling streams.

@pharmacycle_au offers an end-to-end recycling solution for the blister packs, recycling and repurposing the aluminium and plastic to create materials for outdoor decking and fencing.

Hot tip: Create a separate recycling tub for your blister packs at home and next time you go to the chemist, drop a batch off! Just make sure the packets are empty before you tip them into the collection box near the dispensary, and hang onto your bag to refill for next time.

One year in one minute 🎉 It’s been a big one at Brisbane Sustainability Agency!

Here’s some of the momentum we’ve made to make Brisbane a clean and sustainable city…

✅ Managed the opening of two active travel bridges, the Breakfast Creek / Yowoggera Bridge and Kangaroo Point Bridge
✅ Coordinated one of Brisbane’s biggest Clean Up Australia Day events across 430 different locations with the help of 28,000 volunteers
✅ Hosted 3 x bird walks along the Archerfield Wetlands Parkland Discovery Trail
✅ Record numbers at the 2024 Green Heart Fair with more than 18,000 attendees learning how to be more sustainable at home
✅ Supported 260 sporting clubs, community organisations, and kindergartens across Brisbane through the Resilient Clubs Support Program to save $660,000 in water and energy costs each year
✅ Launched BSA’s Sustainable Action Training Program with tailored training programs to educate learning institutions, small businesses and large organisations on climate literacy.
✅ Delivery of the Archerfield Wetlands District Parkland which transformed a former industrial site into a vibrant four-hectare park.
✅ The 2024 WasteSMART Brisbane Awards had a record 402 nominations for residents, community groups, businesses, early learning centres and schools.
✅ Managed the Brisbane Metro depot community open day with thousands of visitors checking out the future of public transport
✅ 40,523 plants have been planted across 4.3 hectares with the support of 785 volunteer hours since last October through the Biodiverse Brisbane Initiative in partnership with @greeningaustralia.
✅ Successful conclusion of the Flood Resilient Suburbs Program, an initiative by @BrisbaneCityCouncil.
✅ Developed and certified Australia’s first Carbon Literacy Sports Toolkit in collaboration with @greenplanetsport and @letme.be.frank, to activate the millions engaged in sports to lead climate action.
✅ Completion of the internationally recognised Carbon Literacy training across the entire team, strengthening our status as a Silver Carbon Literate Organisation.

As part of the Biodiverse Brisbane Initiative (BBI

As part of the Biodiverse Brisbane Initiative (BBI), we’re on a mission to plant one million native plants within wetland areas and waterway corridors across Brisbane by 2032.

This new planting will increase movement corridors and habitat for land-based animals, improve water quality in our creeks, river, and ultimately Moreton Bay, provide an increase in aquatic animal habitats and increase shade to cool our suburbs.

Since the initiative launched last October, 40,523 have been planted across 4.3 hectares with the support of volunteers giving 785 hours of their time.

A big thank you goes out to our major partner, @greeningaustralia, who is working with us towards this target.
